This framed Oil on Canvas, in very good condition, depicts a view of the Bou Saâda oasis in Algeria, also nicknamed "City of Happiness", or "Gateway to the Desert".
The old town is seen on the left, with two people at the water's edge in the center.

Maxime Noiré was born in Guinglange, Moselle, in 1861. He died in Algérie in 1927.
Harsh volumes, bold colors, broad, sweeping vision: "spaces that French landscape, confined to analysis, never suspected", writes Victor Barrucaud. On the bare, bare earth, the sun's illumination creates a superb illumination in its gray and mauve contrasts. Barrucaud sees in these pale gray volumes faded by the light, characteristic of his early canvases, the best period of "this daring father of North African painting, one who marks a date, a departure and an arrival; then he warmed up his palette and his fireworks borrowed from Ziem, from his gleaming Venises, out of a need to please and be understood by a public that also had its own preconceived idea of splendor".
As a member of the Société des Orientalistes Français, Maxime Noiré regularly sent his views of Algeria to the Paris Salon, a country of which he remains the undisputed leading exponent because he knew how to understand it and express all its constituent elements in a synchronicity that was both moving and brilliant.
