Representing the Battle of Sempach drawn in 1886 for the 500th anniversary.
The Battle of Sempach, a locality in the canton of Lucerne, took place on July 9, 1386. It pitted the troops of the Duchy of Austria led by Leopold III of Habsburg, who was killed in the battle, against those of Lucerne supported by elements from Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. It is regarded as one of the major battles that enabled the fledgling Swiss Confederation to free itself from Habsburg claims.
Auguste Doviane (pseudonym of Auguste Viande), 1825-1887, Swiss painter of history, military subjects and genre scenes. Born in Rome, he was the son of a Genevan man and an Italian woman. He studied at the Antwerp Academy. He married in Paris in 1852 and changed his name from Viande to Doviane. After a military career during which he rose to the rank of Major in the infantry, he distinguished himself as a military painter. He was also a theater decorator and teacher. He settled in Marseille in 1881, where he died in 1887. Works in the Museums of Berne, Geneva and Neuchâtel. Artist listed in Bénézit, Coté Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc.
This paper is in very good condition, with a few small freckles visible at the top.
The Ink, never cleaned, not dirty, is in good original condition.
In its original under-glass frame (very beautiful moiré glass).
