René Barbaix, 1909-1966, was a Belgian allegorical and surrealist painter and draftsman. Primarily self-taught, he studied at the academies of Schaerbeek and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. He stayed and furthered his studies in Paris in 1931. He held his first exhibition in Brussels in 1936 and won the Prix Art Jeune (Young Art Prize) in 1943. He was one of the founding members of "La Jeune Peinture Belge" (Young Belgian Painting) in 1945. He began with allegorical figurative painting before evolving towards surrealism. Through his discovery of the works of Braque, Matisse, and Picasso, he moved towards Cubism. This evolution became more pronounced after 1945 and is expressed through post-Cubist elements in a decorative style. Exploring the limits of non-figurative art, his painting evolved towards abstraction in the 1950s. Works are held in the Museums of Brussels, La Louvière, and Madrid. The artist is listed in the Bénézit, Arto, and Piron dictionaries, and is also listed on Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc.
