Pair Of Antique Carved And Gilded Picture Frames From Central Italy
Pair of Antique Carved and Gilded Frames from Central Italy crafted from a single slab of Swiss stone pine, carved in the imaginative and dynamic ornamental style typical of Baroque. The structure is dominated by “C” and “S” volutes that intertwine with extreme fluidity; curled and jagged acanthus leaves are present, imparting a sense of organic movement. The upper crown of the cornice is particularly elaborate, featuring a stylized shell or floral motif that serves as a visual focal point, typical of ceremonial or mirror frames in the “cartoccio” style. The gilding in fine gold leaf was applied using gouache over a ground of Sienna earth. The frames originate from Central Italy and date to the mid-1700s. Aside from minor losses and old restorations visible in the joints documented in the photo gallery, the frames are in good condition. Both have undergone repeated woodworm treatments.
