This is a magnificent post-impressionist composition with a fauve tendency by Marcel Arnaud, painting one of his favorite subjects a still life, here fish, puffs or herrings on newspaper and an onion.
We immediately recognize Arnaud's powerful brushstrokes, extremely rich in material, as well as his palette made up of Terre de Sienne, yellows, oranges, browns and here a superb petroleum blue background...a very interesting work.

I no longer need to introduce the 2nd master of Aix after Cézanne, also renowned for his views of Saint-Victoire, but also his still lifes and portraits.
Marcel Arnaud, born in Marseille on October 8, 1877 and died in Aix-en-Provence on March 18, 1956, was a French painter

In 1895, Marcel Arnaud went to Paris, where he worked on theater sets while studying the old masters at the Louvre museum. In Paris, he met the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. He met Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) in Saint-Henri sur Marseille, where he painted several works in his presence. After returning to Marseille, where he married in 1904, he exhibited in several regional salons and with the painter Jean-Baptiste Olive.

In 1914, he was appointed professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence and became its director from 1917 to 1946. At the same time, Marcel Arnaud refused to sell all of his ownto the famous art dealer Ambroise Vollard, who had asked him to do so by mutual agreement. His friend John Rewald supported him on this point, writing: "Marcel Arnaud brings to painting the Cézannienne continuity that time has not left to Paul Cézanne". The many exchanges of letters between Cézanne and Marcel Arnaud were in the hands of John Rewald.

He also became curator of the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence from 1926 to 1947. In 1953-1954, he painted a series of works on Evian opposite Geneva. He exhibited in Marseille and Aix-en-Provence until his death in 1956. He is buried in the Saint-Pierre d'Aix-en-Provence cemetery on the same spot as Paul Cézanne (1839-1906).
