Cameo-style Souvenir Ring, Countess Of Portland - English Workmanship
Commemorative ring in 14k gold adorned with a portrait under glass in imitation of cameos.
The reverse of the ring bears the engraved inscription: "J. M. Countefs of Portland ob. 25 March 1751 æt. 78", most likely referring to Jane Martha, Countess of Portland, who died in 1751 at the age of 78.
This ring illustrates the British taste for souvenir jewelry, where memory and neoclassical inspiration meet.
The portrait of the Countess (probably in wax or soft paste) is remarkably finely executed, as is the originality of the choice to depict her not in her youth, but in the maturity of age.
English work of the late 18th - early 19th century.
