Art Deco Suspension Lamp In Moulded Glass By Lalique, Stalactite Decoration
Art Deco frosted molded glass suspension signed Lalique, with spectacular ice stalactite decoration, circa 1925-1930. The circular bowl in satin-finish white glass is punctuated by long tapered spikes falling in relief, evoking stalactites or frozen drops, which diffuse a soft, vibrant light when the suspension is lit. Three twisted cords join an elegant molded glass cover, emphasizing the luminaire's slender silhouette and sculptural character.
A major creator of the French decorative arts, René Lalique (1860-1945) first made a name for himself as a jeweler before devoting himself, from the 1910s onwards, to molded glass, which he elevated to an art form in its own right. In the 1920s-1930s, his lighting fixtures - vases, sconces, pendant and ceiling lights - became emblematic of the Art Deco style, with their purity of line, inventive naturalistic motifs and subtle material effects. This satin-finish pressed-molded glass suspension perfectly illustrates his taste for forms inspired by nature (water, ice, plants) and for subdued light that is both decorative and atmospheric.
