Circle Of William Shayer Junior, The Return Of The Fishing Boats
Artist: Cercle De William Shayer (1811-1892)
Oil on canvas
H. 80; W. 120 cm
This pleasing large-format oil on canvas, depicting a scene of everyday coastal life, a fishing trip.
The action takes place on the golden sands of a vast northern beach. Fishermen, merchants and onlookers bustle around boats pulled up on the sand.
In the foreground, a cart is preparing to load merchandise. Beside it, a group of a few figures, men, women and children, wait on the shore, while others crowd close to the boats, carrying baskets and bundles.
Clouds cross a vast, luminous sky, which takes up most of the canvas. The painter's mastery of this changing atmosphere also displays a keen sense of light and movement, combined with a great talent for color.
The whole recalls the work of William Shayer Junior (1811 - 1892). Son of the painter William Shayer I (1787-1879), the two men frequently collaborated and their works are sometimes confused.
The secoastal landscapes were very popular in the 19th century in northern France, as well as in England and the Netherlands. They were depicted by artists such as Eugène Isabey (1803-1886), Richard Parkes Bonington(1802-1828) and Jacob Joseph Eeckhout (1793-1861).
Painting in very good condition. Very slight loss at lower left. Slight impression of the frame. Sold without frame.
