Nagaland Shell Pendant
This small jewel from Nagaland (northeastern India), is made from an ancient trade shell, once worn as an earring and then transformed into a pendant by a hammered silver metal mounting.
Very prized in trade networks, these shells were prestige markers and entered traditional finery, often linked to headhunters.
The punctuated decoration forms a stylized anthropomorphic figure, with extended limbs, testifying to a symbolic vocabulary specific to Naga cultures.
Nagaland, late 19th, early 20th century for the shell.
