Bust Of A Child In Carrara Marble Signed And Dated Francesco Stanga 1837
Francesco Stanga, Bust of a Child in Carrara Marble, 1837, signed and dated on the back of the bust. The Neoclassical sculpture depicts a boy aged four years and nine months with a cheerful disposition, as indicated by the inscription in block letters, engraved and gilded at the base of the bust: ‘FIVE YEARS MINUS THREE MONTHS – HE IS MY SMILE’. JOY. A COMMON CHARM. The child wears a neckerchief tied around his neck over a shirt with a wide collar.
The identity of the child is unknown , unlike that of the artist Francesco Stanga, engraved on the back of the sculpture together with the date; he was a sculptor active in the Brescia area in the first half of the 1800s. The work is carved from white Carrara marble;this lovely Lombard sculpture of neoclassical influence is in good age related condition and comes from a private collection in Milan.
