19th Century Rosolino Barbera Marble Bas-relief "1838-1866"
Artist: Rosolino Barbera
Large 19th-century bas-relief in white Carrara marble, carved by sculptor Rosolino Barbera (1838-1866), depicting the Italian poet Nina Siciliana, an 18th-century poetess considered the first Italian woman to write poetry in the vernacular. The poet is portrayed in profile with an elaborate hairstyle, her hair gathered on her head by a crown, similar to celebratory portraits of poetesses or allegorical figures, and long hair falling to her shoulders. The portrait depicts her with a composed and aristocratic expression. The work is mentioned in the artist's biography in the volume edited by Luigi Sarullo, "Dictionary of Sicilian Artists - Sculpture."
