An academic painter and pupil of Eugène Fromentin, Alfred Caillaud exhibited still lifes of various kinds (armor, objects, flowers, cheese, dessert...) in the 1870s and 1880s.
Our painting is inspired by the Japanese fashion of the 1880s. It depicts Christmas presents, with a stuffed toy, a child's shoe filled with papillotes, a Japanese doll, as well as sugared almonds and candies placed near the hearth of a fireplace.
A beautiful rendering of materials, particularly for the very pretty Japanese doll, an object that children received when Japan was very fashionable in France in the 1880s. To cite just one example, Pierre Loti's novel "Madame Chrysanthème" dates back to 1887 (Pierre Loti visited Japan five times between 1885 and 1901).
