Jaeger-lecoultre "atmos" Circa 1970
Provenance
Atmos clock by Jaeger-LeCoultre, the renowned Swiss manufacture founded in 1833 and celebrated for its technical innovations. Introduced in the late 1920s, the Atmos became one of the brand’s most iconic creations, further refined and widely distributed from the 1930s onwards. The present example dates from the 1970s, a period marked by clean-lined, modern interpretations of the model.
Description
The clock features the characteristic Atmos construction, with a rectangular gilt brass case with chamfered corners and fully glazed panels, allowing an unobstructed view of the movement. The circular dial, with a silvered background, is fitted with applied gilt triangular hour markers and Arabic numerals at the quarters. A central aperture reveals the gear train and escapement, emphasizing the mechanical sophistication of the piece. The movement is mounted above the signature annular torsion pendulum, visible at the base. The overall aesthetic is restrained and geometric, reflecting the design language of the 1970s, combining technical clarity with decorative refinement.
Technique and materials
Gilt brass case, beveled glass panels, metal dial with applied elements, steel hands. The Atmos mechanism operates without conventional winding: it is powered by minute variations in temperature and atmospheric pressure. A hermetically sealed capsule containing gas expands and contracts with thermal changes, generating the energy required to wind the mainspring. The torsion pendulum, oscillating very slowly, ensures exceptional efficiency and stability.
Dating
1970s, supported by the dial design, typography, and the construction of the gilt brass and glass case, consistent with Jaeger-LeCoultre production of that decade.
Condition
Very good overall condition. The gilding is well preserved with a consistent surface. The movement is in working order. Minor signs of use commensurate with age, without significant impact on appearance or function.
Function and display
Designed as a mantel or desk clock, combining practical timekeeping with strong decorative presence. A significant example of 20th-century horology, suitable for both classic and modern interiors as a refined focal object.
