Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (1591-1666), was one of the great masters of Italian Baroque painting and an essential figure of the Bologna School. His work is distinguished by a masterly use of chiaroscuro, great expressive intensity and a remarkable ability to translate human emotions. Influenced by both Caravaggesque naturalism and the classical tradition of the Carracci, Guercino developed a personal style that was both powerful and sensitive, earning him considerable renown during his lifetime. In great demand, he worked on numerous prestigious commissions, leaving an abundant body of work that would leave a lasting mark on 17th-century Italian painting.
