Charles X The Charles X Era

Charles X-era stepped desk in rosewood and lemonwood

First half of the 19th century

A rare and elegant Charles X-era stepped desk, crafted from sumptuous rosewood veneer enhanced with lemonwood inlays, offering a striking contrast of colors and great decorative richness.

The perfectly balanced composition elegantly illustrates the aesthetic of the Charles X period, where the purity of the lines is combined with the excellence of precious materials. The filleted frames and lemonwood marquetry subtly highlight the various panels, while the panels are adorned with delicate motifs of rosettes, palmettes, and stylized ornaments inspired by classical motifs.

The upper section features an elegant stepped design comprising two side compartments flanking three drawers, offering highly functional storage space while maintaining a sense of visual lightness.

The lower band conceals a sliding writing surface upholstered in red morocco leather, ensuring comfortable everyday use, as well as two harmoniously proportioned storage drawers.

The exceptional quality of this desk is also evident in its base. The elegantly curved front legs are adorned with spectacular, finely chiseled busts of winged women in mercury-gilded bronze. These figures, inspired by antiquity, with outstretched wings and delicately sculpted features, serve as a decorative element of the highest order and attest to the exceptional craftsmanship of this piece.

The legs terminate in delicate gilded bronze feet, while the rear legs are joined by a carved plinth base that lends the entire piece stability, elegance, and lightness.

The veneer displays a magnificent grain with warm highlights, enhanced by a complete restoration carried out in our workshop according to the highest standards of craftsmanship. Thanks to this restoration, one can now fully appreciate the original quality of this piece and the finesse of its craftsmanship.

With its harmonious proportions and striking decorative presence, this desk will naturally find its place in a classic interior, a study, a library, or an elegant contemporary apartment seeking a piece with character.

Our Opinion

This desk embodies all the qualities sought after in high-end Charles X furniture: a precious wood with magnificent grain, refined marquetry, mercury-gilded bronze fittings of remarkable quality, and an elegant, perfectly proportioned design.
