Late 18th Century Pair Of Watercolors With Shepherds By Domenico De Angelis

Refined pair of watercolors on paper, framed in carved and gilded wood. The two watercolors depict two shepherd musicians, one woman and one man, in period attire. The man is playing the fife, while the woman is depicted playing the harpsichord. This pair of watercolors is exquisitely tasteful and refined, appreciated for the fine stylistic and physiognomic rendering of the figures, capable of adding a touch of class to any setting. Both works bear the artist's signature "D. De Angelis" at the bottom, a reference to the famous Roman painter Domenico De Angelis (1735-1804), also known for his "popular" watercolors and renowned for being the painter of the Roman Borghese family. Finally, there are minor defects to the frames, including the plaque on the back indicating they came from a French-Parisian workshop. Roman manufacture, late 18th century.
