Roberto Guastalla trained at the Academy of Parma with Guido Carmignani. He made numerous trips to the Near East in the 1880s and 1890s. Guastalla traveled to Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and the vast regions of the Ottoman Empire. From the cities of Fez, Mekinez, Damascus and Cairo, he brought back a series of drawings and, above all, sketches, which constitute one of the most interesting and original aspects of Guastalla's work.
His many drawings and sketches depict Arab architecture, city walls and gates, markets, bazaars, mosques, streets and landscapes.
Here we have one of these sketches, in watercolor, with a lovely trompe l'oeil decoration. His works are often animated, as here with merchants, women, children, pilgrims, camel-drivers and Berber riders.
