A pifferaro was a young itinerant musician who, in Italy, played the piffero, the fife, the bagpipes or the flute, danced or sang. "When, at Christmas time, the pifferari come down from the mountains, the sacred way resounds under the iron shoes of the shepherds" (Quinet, All. et Ital., 1836, p.193).
