Pair Of Angel Candle Holders, Carved From Wood And Finished In Gold And Polychrome
Pair of Candle-bearing Angels
gilded and polychrome wood sculptures
Northern Italy, late 17th–early 18th century
Dimensions: height 116 x 30 x 27 cm
Pair of sculptures depicting candle-bearing angels, created between the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
The angels are depicted standing, clad in classical-style tunics characterized by deeply carved drapery and flowing folds, typical of the aesthetic sensibility of the High Baroque period.
The surface is embellished with opulent gold leaf gilding that covers the garments and the majestic outstretched wings, creating extraordinary plays of light and shadow.
The delicately crafted faces convey a sense of solemn serenity.
The heads are adorned with leafy garlands and surmounted by small friezes, while the arms elegantly support terminal cornucopias with candle holders.
Of notable architectural interest are the plinth bases, decorated on the front with winged cherub heads and finished with green backgrounds that highlight the gilded moldings.
The piece rests on refined scroll feet, maintaining impeccable stylistic consistency.
