Largecovered pot in fine cobalt-blue stoneware with German salt glaze fromWesterwald 2nd half 19th century; example of the ''Historismus'' style, typicalWesterwald decorative ceramics of the late 19th/early 20th century.
The Renaissance-stylerenaissance-style decoration features two character busts in reliefin relief inscribedin a decor of floral interlacing & framed by head-shaped handholds.handgrips in the shape of a ram's head capped with a crozier. It rests on a moulded flutedrests on a molded pedestal flanked by four lion's heads.
The lid is adorned with a smalllid is adorned with a caricature of Bacchus.

Hanke,a prominent ceramist and businessman, played a key role in thethe revival of glazed stoneware from the XV-XVI century. In1875, he was appointed official supplier to the Royal Court ofCourt of Prussia. The factorywas closed in 1938.
