Larch Reliquary Shrine, Savoie Or Queyras, Late 18th Century.
These church-shaped caskets contained relics of saints and precious instruments of worship: ciborium, chalice,
burettes...which explains their closing systems and the presence of metal reinforcements as a pledge of inviolability.
Their style brings them closer to the enameling work of the Limoges workshops. Ours, probably from a modest mountain parish, features compass carving. It features a double-sloped roof,
and rests on four turned, slightly divergent feet.
The front is adorned with three 'marguerites' and two rosettes, with a rouelle in the center.
The rear bears five rosettes and in the center of the 'roof', a large rouelle.
The sides are carved with two beautiful rosettes.
These mountain folk art objects were placed on altars or in church tabernacles.
