Intaglio 10 x 12 mm
Ring size: US 73/4- UK P½ · FR 56 (resizeable)
Total weight: 8,25 gr
Intaglio: Roman art, 2nd century A.D.

Cut from deep reddish-brown carnelian, this intaglio depicts a bucolic scene in which Pan - the goat-footed god, ruler of the wilderness - grapples with a billy goat in vigorous combat. The two figures face each other in a dynamic confrontation: Pan's half-animal nature is clearly asserted, his legs ending in animal paws, while the goat rears up in resistance. The scene, bathed in the warm radiance of carnelian, embodies the rustic, irreverent vitality so dear to Roman representations of the Dionysian world.

The intaglio is set in a later 20th-century gold mount - a sober, elegant case that leaves all its primacy to the antique gem. A chip on the stone's lower edge has been skilfully integrated into the gold setting, rendered virtually invisible by the bezel and ensuring the intaglio's secure attachment.
