Bust Of Marianne, In Plaster, IIIrd Republic France Late 19th Century

Marianne bust, allegorical figure of the French Republic, in formerly polychromed plaster, 3rd Republic, France late 19th century. In generally good condition, a tiny chip to the nose and a chip to the base are nonetheless noteworthy.

In the guise of a woman wearing a Phrygian cap, she represents the French Republic and its values translated by its motto: "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité". She is an important republican symbol and an icon of freedom and democracy. A national allegorical figure, Marianne occupies a place of honor in the town halls and official buildings of the French Republic, as well as in its events.
