Jean-roger Sourgen : “the Ocean Behind The Dune”
Jean-Roger Sourgen(1883-1978): "L'océan derrière la dune", oil on canvas 54 X 73 cm, mounted in a more recent green and gold frame 71 X 90 cm.
Possibility of re-framing in a large molded oak frame on request (see last photo).
Painted circa 1925/28.
The painter and poet from the Landes region, whose motto on the pediment of his house in Hossegor was "Dream, paint and hunt".
Characteristic of this region, with a hint of the ocean in the backgroundin the background, and whose texture leaves the canvas in reserve, encircling the impastoswith subtle shifts in hue from blue to turquoise to light pinkspinks, and the blaze of pine trees standing out against the duneheather and dead pines, making this one of his finest works.
If it's no longer necessary to present, it wasn't always the case: I remember an extraordinary pastel for which it took me several months to make my customers understand that it was very good and that they shouldand that they should give me 1200 francs for it !
That was yesterday, it seems to me...
An emblematic painter of the Landes region, he depicted it with love and poetry all his life, his worki nterspersed with forays into the neighboring Basque country and a trip to Morocco, but these subjects remain anecdotal in the midst of a constantly renewed, and whose best works from the first periodcan rival those of the Nabis painters.
