Régence Period Gilded Wood Mirror, France, 1715-1740
Mirror of the "pareclose mirror" type, i.e. with a main glass panel surrounded by smaller mirrors separated by rods. Wooden frame, carved and richly gilded. Elaborate openwork crown, with a central stylized shell motif at the top. Underneath is a flower basket motif and a grid pattern (Regency motif), lending a certain lightness to the whole. The mirror has its original mercury panel. The visible oxidation of the reflective layer (with its characteristic "clouds" and crystallization) testifies to the object's advanced age. The mirror is composed of a main central panel and smaller glass borders on the sides, a technique used at a time when the production of large sheets of glass was extremely difficult and expensive.
