Gothic bronze tongs - 15th century - inscription "Dona Nobis Pacem", medieval object
Rare and interesting bronze tongs from the medieval period, dated to the 15th century, probably from Northern Europe (Belgium or the Netherlands).
These tongs feature an inscription in Gothic letters on each side: "Dona Nobis Pacem", meaning "Give us peace" in Latin, giving the object a strong symbolic and spiritual dimension.
This type of tong is generally interpreted as a utilitarian instrument linked to oil lamps, enabling the wick to be adjusted or the lamp to be handled without burning oneself. However, this attribution remains uncertain, and some specialists also suggest a religious use, notably for handling sacred objects or to avoid direct contact.
The example presented here stands out for its excellent state of preservation: it is complete, without restoration, and has a very beautiful, brilliant green patina, which is particularly aesthetically pleasing.
Dimensions: length 12.3 cm.
An authentic object from the Middle Ages, rare on the market, as interesting for a collector as for a lover of ancient art.
