Art Nouveau
Art Nouveau "Allégorie du Printemps" brooch, signed Vernier
An 18k yellow gold brooch featuring a round medallion in relief depicting a profile of a young woman facing right, lightly clothed, wearing a crown of flowers - presumably an allegory of Spring. The medallion is flanked by two three-leaf clovers, typical good-luck motifs in the Symbolist vocabulary of the period.
The monogram VE is engraved on the medallion, corresponding to the signature of Émile Séraphin Vernier (1852-1927), a Parisian painter and medallist renowned for his medallion portraits of women, frequently used in jewelry during the Belle Époque.
French work, circa 1900.
Technical characteristics:
Dimensions: approx. 2.7 × 1.4 cm
Closing: semi-open ring pin
Weight: 2.2 g
Metal: 18k yellow gold - 750/1000
Hints: eagle head (French 18k guarantee); G-F master hallmark on pin
Condition
Very good overall condition. The engraving on the medallion is clean and well preserved, with legible and precise face modeling.
Slight traces of surface wear, with no impact on the reading of the motif or the holding of the pin.
The piece can be worn without difficulty on a wool, collar or ribbon - typical uses for this brooch format in the Belle Époque.
