Artist: Forget Charles (1886 – 1960, France)
Charles FORGET (1866 - 1960, Paris, France)
La Zone à Bicêtre, 1938
Oil on canvas
Signed
41 × 33 cm - With frame: 60 × 52 cm
Very good condition
In the center of the composition stands out a vermilion roulotte, door open, flanked on the right by a second dark blue roulotte; on the left and in the background, wooden barracks complete the encampment. In the foreground, two silhouettes leaning over a campfire enliven an area of bare earth, while other figures bustle about under a pale sky.
The brushwork, direct and lively, betrays the plein-air painter accustomed to quickly fixing a scene on the motif. The palette - frank greens, dark ochres, touches of bright red - gives this genre scene a liveliness that distances it from any pathos.
The subject represented is the Bicêtre "zone", the strip of land that encircled Paris along the former military enclosure. Abandoned by the army after 1870, it was gradually taken over by a precarious population of fairground workers, ragpickers and migrants living in shacks and trailers. Redevelopment work, begun in the 1930s, was making slow progress by the time Forget set down his easel.
A remarkably prolific Parisian painter and engraver, Charles Forget spent his entire life roaming the French countryside and suburbs, notebook and easel in hand. His interest in the outskirts of the capital is long-established: in particular, he painted several views of the banks of the Bièvre in Gentilly and, as early as 1928, a canvas devoted to the Zoniers barracks at Porte de Vanves. Exhibited at the Salon des artistes français and the Société nationale des beaux-arts throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he also took part in the Exposition internationale de Paris in 1937. His works are mainly to be found in the collections of the museums of the City of Paris.
