Wool Tapestry Decorated With Cranes. China 19th Century.
Wool rug or blanket woven with stylized cranes, details painted in brown. The tapestry is supple, but could not be used as a comfortable blanket; it would be more like a fine carpet or hanging. The wool is very thick and could be camel hair. The tapestry is cut at the bottom, which is frayed. The decoration is "traversant", so the reading is the same no matter which side is looked at. Chinese work circa 1900. Similar examples were sold by Sotheby's in 1980. Dimensions: 185x117cm.
