Auberger Large Painting Seaside La Vague Brittany Saint-lunaire Art Deco Sky
Louis Auberger 1920 marine bretonne Pointe du Décollé Saint-Lunaire
Important oil on canvas signed Louis Auberger circa1920, depicting La Pointe du Décollé in Saint-Lunaire, on the Brittany coast.
The composition captures a stormy sea at the foot of the rocks, under a stormy sky crossed by bright escapes. This seascape is striking for its visual power and masterful construction.
Auberger organizes the space around a strong rocky diagonal on the left, which opens the view out to sea and serves as a backdrop for a succession of monumental waves. The almost theatrical rhythm of the waves gives the painting a spectacular breath of fresh air, while the contrasts between the deep blues, milky greens of the foam and purplish browns of the rocks create a highly seductive tension.
The heavy sky, worked in thick masses, weighs down on the scene but lets in a cold light that enlivens the entire surface. The whole is part of a marine tradition still firmly rooted in the heritage of the late 19th century, with a strong taste for effect, movement and decorative presence. The subject is also set in a coastal topography that has long held the attention of painters including Charles Wislin.
The painting is accompanied by its early cartouche: "Oh! la Mer, Oh! la gueuse des gueuses, / En a-t-elle fait des malheureux ou malheureuses" by Théodore Botrel, which further reinforces the poetic reading of the subject.
Nice condition overall. The painting presents well-preserved material and a beautiful freshness of reading. Some wear, rubbing and light surface marks visible, as well as traces of use to the frame. See photos for details.
