A Gold Ring Set With A 19th Century Red Glass Intaglio. Bust Of Diana.
Glass: 12 × 15 mm
Ring: length 12 mm, width 6 mm
Size N US 6¾ & French 54 (resizeable)
Weight: 4.34 g
Intaglio: 19th century
The goddess of the hunt is depicted in left-facing profile, her bust draped in a tunic and crowned by a crescent moon. Her bow is faintly suggested behind her shoulders. The carving, executed in the tradition of antique gems, is precise and confident, with particular care given to the treatment of the hair and the delicacy of the facial profile.
Dark red glass imitating garnet was widely used in 19th-century European workshops to replicate the appearance of ancient intaglios, a tradition sustained by the neoclassical taste and the legacy of the Grand Tour. Signs of surface wear consistent with age and use.
Provenance
Former American family collection, 1930s-1990s.
