Late XIXᵉ - Early XXᵉ century

Nepal

A ritual object with a strong symbolic charge, this monoxyle wooden sculpture represents a spring guardian from Himalayan traditions. In Nepalese cultures, water points - springs, fountains and ancient networks (dhara, hiti) - are perceived as places inhabited by invisible forces, requiring protection and mediation. These figures were installed to preserve the balance between men, the elements and the spirits linked to water.

A protective presence linked to sacred waters

In local beliefs, water constitutes a living space, associated with entities that should be honored and appeased. The guardian acts as a figure of intercession, ensuring the continuity of the source and the protection of surrounding communities.

The marked frontality, absence of movement and concentration of volumes convey this function: it's not about representing, but embodying a stable, active presence.

Stylistic and ethnographic characteristics

- Monoxyle sculpture carved from a single block

- Voluminous head with accentuated proportions, emphasizing the spiritual dimension

- Schematized face: deep-set eyes, ridged nose, oval mouth, interiorized expression

- Compact, geometric body, reinforcing the impression of anchoring

- Deliberately spare treatment, pertaining to a symbolic rather than naturalistic language

- Traces of red and dark pigments, corresponding to ritual deposits

- Old wear with alterations linked to humidity and xylophagous activity, consistent with outdoor exposure

The cylindrical base, cut into the continuity of the block, presents an unusual rough appearance. Its precise function remains uncertain: it could correspond to an anchoring or fixing system, possibly linked to its original location, without any clear trace of functional wear making it possible to affirm this with certainty.
