Sarcophagus And Bridge Chest Of Drawers, Regency Period
Beautiful sarcophagus and bridge chest of drawers inlaid with violet wood, the slightly domed front opening with three drawers in three rows separated by wide brass fluting, the sides inlaid with geometric motifs, it is topped with a rancid Belgian marble molded with a period corbin beak and rests on four cambered legs.
Exceptional original gilded and finely chased bronze trim with its well-preserved gilding, including falls decorated with empanelled female masks, keyholes, drop handles and rosettes, cornucopia moustaches, apron decorated with acanthus leaves, wrap-around scrolled foot hooves.
Work by a great Parisian master cabinetmaker of the Regency period.
Safeguarding and maintenance restorations carried out by an experienced cabinetmaker, pad varnish, bronzes not re-gilded.
In keeping with the work of the great Parisian master cabinetmakers of the early 18th century, the frame and back are in oak, the side panels, intermediate bottoms and drawer fronts are in fir, and finally the drawer sides and bottoms are in walnut, the latter fitted into the sides and back rail to slide flat onto the intermediate bottoms.
Sarcophagus commodes are rare, produced over a fairly short period covering the late reign of Louis XIV and the Regency, and most without stamps.
