SABRE D'OFFICIER DE LA MARINE DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE ARABE SYRIENNE, Mid 20th century (1963-1972). 32669
Gilt brass frame. Two-limbed guard forming an openwork shell on the front representing a round medallion with Syrian-language inscription framed by laurel branches, openwork counterguard with laurel branch. Guard sprig bordered by a molding with foliage corollas. Long-tailed cap in the shape of an eagle's head. Handle in finely squared black wood, brass filigree. Ferrule decorated with foliage corollas. Natural buffalo tie. Slightly curved blade with gutters, 76 cm long, nickel-plated. The heel of the front face is stamped "STAINLESS", with a shield inscribed in Syrian; two-thirds of the front face is decorated with interlaced geometrics and cartouches bearing Syrian inscriptions, army symbols, navy symbols and air force symbols. The rear face similarly decorated to the front, except for the signature on the blade heel which here is "WKC / SOLINGEN / GERMANY" (Weyesberg Kirschbaum & Cie).
Black patent leather scabbard with three brass trims decorated in relief on their outer faces with interlaced geometric designs with on the central trim the emblem of the Syrian Arab Republic in use between 0963 and 1972.
Dark green cloth hilt embroidered with a baguette of silver thread, with gilded brass trim featuring the double blazon of the Syrian Arab Republic.

This saber is of the utmost rarity; to my knowledge and to date, no other examples are listed in private or public collections. This example is based on an inter-army model adopted at the time of Syria's independence at the end of the French Mandate.
