Portrait Of An 18th-century Lady
Artist: Etienne Aubry
Beautiful 18th-century portrait of a woman wearing a lace bonnet, painted on canvas. She wears a carmine-colored dress with ruffles, a linen kerchief, and a gold cross at the end of a leather cord. Her fine lace bonnet is adorned with pleated flounces and piped gauze. This woman, most certainly from the aristocracy or belonging to high society, gazes at us with a face imbued with great gentleness. The painting, seen by the Turquin gallery in Paris, is attributed to Etienne Aubry and is thought to have been painted around 1770, therefore during the reign of Louis XV. The antique frame is made of carved, patinated, and gilded wood in the Louis XV style and is in very good condition. The canvas, cleaned and revarnished a few years ago, is also in very good condition. The whole forms a beautiful painting, undoubtedly attributed to a talented 18th-century artist. Canvas dimensions: 56 cm x 46 cm. Dimensions with frame: 72 cm x 61 cm. Etienne Aubry, painter, born in Versailles on January 10, 1745, and died there on July 24, 1781. French School. This artist was a student of J.A. Silvestre and Joseph Vien. He quickly became known for his portraits and genre scenes. In these works, his witty drawing and mastery of composition allowed him to rival the most renowned minor masters. His painting, "Farewell to the Nurse," popularized by the charming engraving made by de Launay, is justly famous. Unfortunately, death overtook him at the young age of 36. He also painted history paintings. In the very year of his death, he sent a painting depicting "Coriolanus' Farewell to His Wife" to the Exposition. Several of these paintings are in museums: the Louvre in Paris, Versailles, etc. Source: Benezit, Volume 1, page 312
