Prototype Test Pistol Attributed To "gustave Delvigne" - 1848-1850 - 19th Century

A prototype test pistol of atypical design with a reversed hammer compared to the norm, attributed to Henri Gustave Delvigne, gunsmith and inventor. The cocking mechanism is forward-firing, and the firing pin strikes the rear of the pistol. It features an octagonal Damascus steel barrel with sights and a gray patina. The barrel runs the full length of the pistol. The barrel has 18 coarse grooves and a 14mm caliber at the muzzle. It has the typical "L" shaped lock plate characteristic of Gustave Delvigne's firearms. The mechanism needs servicing. The "S" shaped hammer has a checkered crest. The weapon is numbered 1 at the breech tang. See photos. It has a short walnut stock, is well-made, and has engraved sights. The trigger is located under the trigger guard. There are no proof marks or markings on the visible parts. The stock has not been disassembled to check for markings underneath. This prototype test pistol was manufactured for review by a military evaluation board; generally, three were made for testing.
