Rare: Sword of the Papal Guard ("Guardia civica Pontificia"), founded by Pope Pius IX, 1847 model, SF, 19th century.
One-piece cast brass hilt with fifteen flutes, a leaf-shaped pommel, and a straight crossguard ending in rounded quillons decorated at the center with a four-petaled flower motif featuring leaf designs.
Flat blade with a gray patina, double-edged, and hollow-ground edges, bearing the cutler’s mark “CHARRIERE à PARIS” on the heel on one side and “ACIER FONDU” on the other.

NOTE: Joseph Frédéric Benoit CHARRIERE (1803–1876), a cutler and manufacturer of medical instruments, razors, and straight razors, was located at 9 Rue de l’Ecole de Médecine (1833) and later at 6 Rue de l’Ecole de Médecine (1842).
Originally from Switzerland, he became a naturalized French citizen in 1843.
Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1843 and Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1851.
