Late 19th Century Painted Sheet Metal Boat Lantern Decorated With Sailboats
A substantial painted sheet metal marine lantern, resting on an openwork metal frame designed to suspend and protect the glass globe. The cylindrical body is decorated with hand-painted cartouches depicting sailboats at sea, in a highly decorative, naive style. These maritime scenes, framed by gilded scrolls, lend the piece an authentic charm and strong character. The upper reservoir is topped with a conical, faceted cap, typical of kerosene lanterns intended for outdoor use, promoting ventilation. The original, slightly flattened blown glass globe is adorned with stylized foliage. Iron mount with a side handle and protective arch. Probably Northern European (England or the Netherlands), late 19th – early 20th century.
