Antique Chest
Carved facade: Magnificent bas-relief carving featuring a design of flamboyant Gothic arcades. The façade is organized into four large sections featuring openwork windows with bellows and mouchettes motifs, resting on a balustrade with vertical columns. The center features the keyhole under a counter-curved pointed arch.
Original Ironwork & Assembly: Period wrought-iron lock plate and latch. The solid one-piece walnut top panel features wrought-iron hinges secured with dowels and forged nails.
Structure & Assembly: Traditional assembly with visible dovetail joints at the corners and a grooved bottom panel. The chest rests on two transverse oak runners—likely added later—that ensure stability.
Condition: In fine, authentic condition for a piece of furniture from this early period. Beautiful original dark patina, with slight wear and signs of age consistent with its history (stabilized drying cracks on the top and back panel).
This dowry or wedding chest captivates with its highly sought-after compact proportions (110 cm in length) and the exceptional quality of its carved front. A piece from the High Period with a strong decorative character, ideal as a bedside table, coffee table, or entryway piece.
