Gothic Bronze Bedside Holy Water Font – Flanders, Late 15th Century
Gothic Bronze Bedside Holy Water Font – Flanders, Late 15th Century.
Charming Gothic bronze bedside holy water font, a Flemish work dating from the late 15th century.
This small holy water bucket has a characteristic pentagonal shape, with a pointed spout, flat back, and concave base. The base is slightly raised at the back, clearly indicating its intended wall-mounted function. These objects were traditionally hung near the bed, hence their name "bedside holy water fonts," which were very common in the late Middle Ages.
The basin and side handles were cast in one piece, while the movable bronze handle is a later addition.
The piece is preserved in its original condition, with a beautiful antique patina. Good overall condition, with a small hole near the base.
Comparable models are published in the reference work by Antoon & Torkild Malfait, Seven Centuries of Holy-Water & Holy-Water Fonts in Bronze, Brass and Pewter (Antiqua Nova, 2003).
Dimensions: Basin height: 9 cm; Total height with handle: 15.4 cm.
A beautiful object of domestic devotion, typical of late medieval Flemish production.
Price excludes shipping.
Police Register Ref: A013.
