Pair Of Large Grand Tour Views Of The Gulf Of Naples, Posillipo School, Circa 1840
Artist: Disciple De Giacinto Gigante
Pair of large Neapolitan views, Posillipo School, follower of Giacinto Gigante.
The Posillipo School was a famous landscape painting movement that developed in Naples from around 1820, founded by the Dutchman Anton Sminck van Pitloo and continued by Giacinto Gigante. Characterized by en plein air (outdoor) painting, it renewed the Neapolitan view with romantic atmospheres, natural light, and soft colors, anticipating European naturalism. The school was very popular among foreign travelers on the Grand Tour and the local nobility.
Our two paintings depict:
the city of Naples seen from Posillipo Hill, with a characteristic maritime pine in the foreground and the volcano in the background.
A lake landscape presumably depicting Lake Agnano, a volcanic lake that once lay behind Mount Vesuvius and was drained in 1870.
Both views are painted with refined mastery and great attention to light; even the figures are rendered with attention to detail.
In their original frames.
Dimensions
canvas 70 x 45 cm
frame 82 x 60 cm
