Baoulé Dance Mask From Ivory Coast
Very pretty mask in colored and patinated hardwood, 29.5 cm high. Exquisitely crafted, with small chips to the reddish patina. Some areas show a slight sheen from use. It must have had earrings, as the ears are pierced. The headdress is striated with double hair collars. A small, finely sculpted beard ends in a point. Tribal scarifications adorn the forehead, cheeks, and temples. The master sculptor who created it succeeded in conveying a sense of serenity, wisdom, and reflection in this face with its half-closed eyes and small, prominent mouth. A scorpion is sculpted in the round at its summit. Numerous holes around the edge were used to attach the adornment that would conceal the dancer. Traces of gouges are visible inside. An antique mask with a beautiful patina from use. A fine collector's item.
