The World Of The Grenadiers Of The Guard: "the Battalion Commander Wounded While Crossing The Bridge"
World of the Grenadiers of the Guard. Oil on canvas, "The Wounded Battalion Commander Crossing the Bridge," unsigned. On the back, on one of the stretcher's supports, is an inscription mentioning Monsieur le Comte de Mazerot (to be determined) and an inventory number. 74 x 92.5 cm. French School. Our painting appears to depict a heroic episode, probably during the French Revolutionary Wars. The scene takes place near a bridge, reminiscent of famous battles such as the Battle of Arcole Bridge (1796) or the Battle of Lodi. The soldiers surrounding the wounded officer wear bearskin caps with gold front plates. These are the elite units of the French infantry of this period. The white uniforms remind us that before the widespread adoption of the blue Republic uniform, many units still wore the white of the Ancien Régime. The wounded officer, by his light-colored jacket and epaulettes with fine fringes, may be a captain or a battalion commander. Modern carved and gilded wooden frame. Minor damage, missing material in the upper left corner. Good overall condition. 2800 euros.
