Alfred Garcement (1842-1927) – Lively Farm Scene – Varzy, Nièvre
Artist: Garcement
Beautiful oil on canvas, signed lower left by Alfred Garcement (1842-1927), depicting a lively farm scene. It shows a rural house surrounded by greenery, with a farmer at work and a farmyard of free-roaming animals, in a peaceful and luminous atmosphere. The composition is balanced and vibrant, with a fine mastery of light and color. The cloudy sky and natural tones bring depth and freshness to the whole, in a naturalistic style reminiscent of the Barbizon school. Shipping: €30. Artist's background: Alfred Garcement was born in Varzy in 1842 into a modest family. Drawn to painting from a young age, he had a pivotal encounter with the history painter Philippe Peyrane (1780-1865), whose studio he frequented for several years. In 1863, he participated in his first group exhibition in Nevers, alongside, among others, Hector Hanoteau, whose student he also was. Noticed at this event, he received a grant from the Nièvre General Council, enabling him to enter the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1864, in the studio of Isidore Pils, a painter renowned for his military scenes. He made his debut at the Salon of Painting and Sculpture in 1868 and exhibited there on numerous occasions, participating in a total of 35 Salons during his career. Following the events of 1870-1871, he returned to settle in the Nièvre region while continuing his artistic activity. From then on, he divided his time between his native region and Paris. He also maintained a regular correspondence with the Nièvre poet Achille Millien, who regularly hosted him at Beaumont-la-Ferrière. A painter deeply attached to rural life, he distinguished himself through his genre scenes and landscapes imbued with realism and sensitivity. He died on November 18, 1927, at his home in Varzy. At his funeral, his eulogy was delivered by Guy Lussier, mayor of Varzy and curator of the museum. Today, two streets bear his name, one in Varzy and one in Nevers, testifying to his local roots and the recognition of his work.
