Artist: Paul Madeline
Paul Madeline (1863–1920) – River Landscape, 1906. A beautiful and large oil on canvas by Paul Madeline, a leading figure of the Crozant School, "River Landscape," signed and dated 1906. This composition depicts a peaceful river flowing through a verdant landscape, enlivened by soft light and a slightly hazy atmosphere. The slender trees, colorful banks, and the presence of a small bridge lend the whole a great harmony. The vibrant brushstrokes and luminous palette perfectly illustrate Madeline's Impressionist sensibility. The year 1906 corresponds to a particularly interesting period in the artist's work, when his style reached a beautiful maturity. Technical Specifications: Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1906 lower right. Canvas dimensions: 50 x 65 cm. Dimensions with frame: 65 x 80 cm. Alongside his studies, he worked in publishing and painted in his free time. In 1894, he discovered the Creuse region after a meal at a friend's house, thanks to his meeting with Maurice Rollinat and Léon Detroy. It was then that Madeline fell under the spell of this place. He returned there for several months each year—particularly in the autumn—and painted the surrounding landscapes. He is one of the leading figures among the painters of the Creuse. He exhibited some time later at the Salon des Artistes Français and became a permanent member, as well as at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne. Receiving an honorable mention in 1897, he exhibited two paintings at the 1900 Universal Exposition: "Le port Saint-Nicolas à Paris" and "Effet du matin, sur la Creuse" (Morning Effect on the Creuse). He received another honorable mention. His studio was then located at 17, quai Voltaire in Paris. His success allowed him to live from his art from 1902. In 1914, during the First World War, he was requisitioned as a "mobilized painter".
