Jombert Drawing - Mausoleum Rome 18th Century
French School, 18th century, circle of Jombert.
The Mausoleum of Annia Regilla, Valle della Cafarella, southeast of Rome.
Black chalk and stump drawing on a black chalk counterproof.
26 x 41 cm (sight size) - 49.5 x 63.5 cm (framed).
Minor stains and foxing.
In an antique frame.
A drawing of exquisite detail and monumentality that aptly illustrates the fascination that ancient ruins held for French artists upon their arrival in Rome. Drawn by a left-handed artist. On a counterproof background, but with the exception of the left side, almost the entire drawing is redrawn in black chalk. It can be compared to Jombert, as it evokes the attention to detail in his view of Rome, currently held at the Met. Alternatively, it could be the work of an architect in the style of Jean-Augustin Renard. Probably executed in the 1770s or early 1780s.
Free and insured shipping within mainland France. Visible and available for collection at my stall at the Saint-Ouen flea market.
