Probably a preparatory study, no longer preserved, for his Pietà which was sold on the art market in 2022 (Willow Auction House, sale of February 10, 2022, lot no. 76). The artist's religious works generally date from the beginning of his career when he was a student successively of Cabanel, Delaunay, and then Moreau between 1887 and 1895.
