Carved and giltwood frame, Austria, circa 1830 – 95 x 81 cm

A fine carved and giltwood frame, Austria, circa 1830, representing the early phase of the Second Rococo revival.

With its fluid rocaille decoration and lively scrolling forms, it can easily be mistaken for an 18th-century Maria Theresa period frame.

The design is enriched with bold shell motifs and foliate cartouches at the corners and centres, creating a dynamic and elegant outline characteristic of Central European taste in the early 19th century.

The original gilding, now softly aged, retains a beautiful patina and enhances the sculptural quality of the carving.

The original mounting elements are preserved on the reverse.

General wear, small losses and minor chips to the gilding, particularly on the high points and edges, along with minor structural wear consistent with age.

Highly decorative, equally suitable for a painting or as a striking mirror frame.
