In the decades following Jacques-Louis David, French academic training remained deeply rooted in the study of the nude from the live model. Yet these exercises were seldom conceived as purely anatomical studies. Students were encouraged to adopt poses borrowed from Antiquity or from the great tradition of history painting. Alongside figures inspired by Hercules or Apollo, the Restoration period witnessed the growing popularity of subjects drawn from Christian iconography, among which Saint Sebastian became one of the most enduring. The pose, with the arms crossed above the head, derives from seventeenth-century Baroque masters, above all Guido Reni, whose celebrated depictions of the saint remained an essential point of reference in European academies. The present drawing offers a particularly compelling synthesis of tradition and modernity: while the composition faithfully follows a well-established Baroque prototype, the head is rendered with an almost portrait-like naturalism characteristic of the 1820s, complete with fashionable sideburns and a contemporary hairstyle. This subtle combination of classical idealization and direct observation of the living model gives the drawing an immediacy and vitality that elevate it beyond a conventional academic study.
