Carved Wooden Group "hercules Slaying The Nemean Lion", Late 17th/early 18th Century.
A carved wooden group depicting one of the twelve labors of Hercules, his victory over the Nemean lion. The vanquished and defeated animal is held on its back by Hercules. The hero is portrayed proud and victorious in a heroic nudity inherited from classical representations. With the exception of one of Hercules' arms, which is missing, the sculpture is in good overall condition and displays a beautiful patina with some traces of old polychromy and gilding, particularly on the molded base with its chamfered corners. These representations of mythological scenes were common at the time and intended to decorate the cabinets of curiosities of scholars. French or Italian work dating from the period of Louis XIV, late 17th/early 18th century. Note: Shipping possible to France via Colissimo with tracking and signature required: 30 euros.
